Questions about Space Con

Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions about Space Con, the concept and the current stage of development.

What is Space Con developing?

Space Con is developing standardised, modular habitats — living modules — for future bases on the Moon and Mars. The modules are built as robust solutions that can hold up in the harsh space environment.

The goal is to create the building blocks that make sustainable outposts and long-term settlements possible – from the first Moon bases to permanent Mars settlements.

How does Space Con differ from traditional habitat projects?

Most traditional habitat projects are developed for a specific mission. They tend to be bespoke, expensive to produce in any number, and limited in their ability to work together with systems from other suppliers.

Space Con takes a different route:

  • Standardisation first — we design modular habitats built to shared standards. That makes them cheaper to produce in series and easier to replace or extend.
  • Interoperability as a core principle — our modules are meant to connect to systems from other companies and agencies, not only to our own.
  • Designed for Starship and future heavy launchers — the modules are dimensioned from the start to be transported efficiently in next-generation rockets, which gives more volume and a lower cost per unit.
  • Focused on long-term settlement — rather than solving the needs of a single mission, we build systems that can grow over time, from the first Moon bases to permanent Mars settlements.

In short: where traditional projects are often unique one-off solutions, Space Con builds reusable, standardised building blocks that make it possible to scale a human presence in space.

What stage of development is the project at?

Space Con is at an early stage of development. We are working on concept development and on the design of the first standardised, modular habitats. The focus right now is on:

  • Defining the technical requirements and standards for interoperability
  • Designing systems that suit transport on next-generation rockets, such as Starship
  • Building collaborations with European and Nordic partners

The company was founded in 2025 and is still in its start-up phase. We are not in production yet, but we are working deliberately to lay the solid technical foundation that future Moon and Mars bases will need.

When is the first prototype planned?

Space Con is still in the early concept and design phase. No fixed date for the first prototype has been published yet.

Our current focus is on finishing the underlying design, securing interoperability and establishing the technical standards, before we move on to building a prototype.

Once we have a more precise timeline, it will be announced here on the site and through our channels.

How can I contribute technical expertise?

Space Con is at an early stage and open to working with capable people who have relevant technical expertise in areas such as:

  • Space habitat design and structures
  • Life support systems (ECLSS)
  • Thermal control and radiation protection
  • Modular systems architecture and interoperability
  • Materials for extreme environments
  • Systems engineering and reliability analysis

If you have experience in one or more of these areas, or in a related field, and would like to contribute, we would be glad to hear from you – through the contact page.

Tell us briefly about your background and how you see yourself contributing, and we will take it from there.

How can companies and organisations collaborate with Space Con?

Space Con is open to working with companies, research institutions and organisations that share the vision of standardised, interoperable habitats for the Moon and Mars.

We see particular value in partnerships covering:

  • Technical development and engineering
  • Materials and components for extreme environments
  • Systems integration and interoperability standards
  • Test facilities and prototypes
  • Research and knowledge sharing
  • Funding and strategic alliances

As an early-stage company we prioritise collaborations that strengthen both technical quality and progress towards flight-capable solutions. Interested companies and organisations are welcome to get in touch.

Is Space Con open source?

No — not the whole project. Space Con is not an open source project from end to end.

We are an early-stage company building standardised modular habitats. What holds pressure, air and people alive is not something we can put out freely. That part of the design, the safety case and the critical systems stay closed, so that we can control quality, certification and the path towards flight-capable solutions.

Some of it will be open. We intend to open what makes interoperability possible: interfaces, connection standards and the documentation others can build on, so that modules can be joined without starting over every time.

We are glad to receive ideas for the module itself — and the parts that can strengthen a shared ecosystem without compromising safety, we will make available over time.

Is Space Con looking for investors?

Space Con is at an early stage and open to conversations with investors who have an interest in space technology and in long-term projects around habitats for the Moon and Mars.

We are still in the concept and design phase, so any investment would go primarily into technical development, prototype work and building partnerships.

Interested investors are welcome to contact us for a conversation with no strings attached.

Are the habitat visualisations shown real prototypes?

No – the visualisations you see are concept illustrations and early design proposals.

Space Con is still at an early stage of development, and the images and renderings shown are meant to convey the vision and the overall principles behind our standardised, modular habitats. They are not final product images or finished prototypes.

The actual design will develop along with technical work, testing and collaboration with partners.
